Walking into the theatre, I joked "my greatest wish for this film is for Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult to play it out".

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Don't understand the critical reception at all.

I think it's the age of streaming that hurts movies like this. Had it been 1994, this movie would be doing better volume than it is. Maybe if Godzilla was female again, it would hit 1 bil

I found the movie good as hell, way more better than Edwards. I haven't seen a Godzilla film like this since 2003 and it wasn't cheesy crap like Final Wars (Cause King of the Monsters was WB's retelling without ALIENS). Sure there wasn't much fighting with other monsters, but I can see 3 more films from this, Kong vs Godzilla, Monster Island and last but not least Mechagodzilla vs Godzilla.

He was from looks like Atlantis, which I thought was interesting and Serizawa's death was very similar to 54' but rather than being the destroyer of mankind with the oxygen destroyer (which he didn't create in this but military did) he was the savior by healing Godzilla from the oxygen destroyer.
Your spoiler is the "wonderful callback" in my normal review. Also I was very satisfied to see the Oxygen Destroyer used in another movie because I've always wondered why they never bothered to reinstate that into another reboot. I was, however, disappointed that it was a military project.

Pretty much the only good thing about this movie was listening to G theme in an IMAX hall:

I was a very lucky kid who got to see three Heisei films on a big screen... Really missed hearing this awesome piece of music with theatrical sound system since the 90's. Akira Ifukube was a blessing to this world.

Seems like I enjoyed this film a lot more than you did, but Bear McCreary's work on the soundtrack was definitely a big part of that. Thought he did a fantastic job integrating the various classic themes into the overall score, and that Blue Oyster Cult cover over the closing credits was excellent.
