Over done trailer, but looks interesting. I've done a lot of research on the disaster the last few years. They only recently finished the new protective cover for the blown reactor, replacing the old one which they'll show in this.

I just saw a commercial for this the other day and am definitely interested. Most of the HBO series are done really well, so I think it’ll be worth watching.

I started watching this over the weekend. It's pretty good, but there's next to no real Russians in the cast, mostly Brits. Knowing enough about the disaster, they do get a lot right.

Emily Watson's character is 100% made up.
Also, her part of the story is ridiculously unrealistic.

I love how Deputy Head of Belarusian Party Committee drinks vodka during working hours.
Also, drinking vodka as if it was whisky... hilarious!

Why helicopter? They were using cars, for fuck's sake.

Hollywood always stereotypes Russians. And yes she was a composite character.

The next episode is tonight and I guess it’s them shoveling the graphite off the roof.

I also love how Pripyat - a 16 years fresh, still expanding, city of builders, located at the crossroads of USSR's major transport routes - looks like some old suburb, from inside and outside.

I’ve heard this is decent so I’ll give it a watch when I get back from vacation. I wasn’t expecting it to be 100% accurate so I may enjoy it.

They didn’t even show the Ferris-wheel as far as I remember. It never opened but it’s an iconic landmark.

There’s enjoyment in it. When you look at the disaster in a vacuum, they convey very well how fucking terrifying the exposed core and cleanup was. One of the characters who was a real person got a lethal dose of radiation poisoning and them on their deathbed was pretty hard to watch since the makeup was horrific.

Last episode just aired. All and all was a great mini series. I’ll buy it when it hits blu ray.

I've followed this channel for years and it's a good one to follow if you want to see a lot of on sight stuff of the plant and the surrounding area, although she hasn't posted in a while.

I'm glad they showed the New Safe Confinement at the end of the last episode, given that's sorta the book end of the event since that's the last thing needed to dismantle the reactor building. The readings around the plant went down by ten times apparently when they finally moved the new cover over the old sarcophagus.

The sarcophagus was set to expire in 2016 since it had a 30 year expected lifespan. By that time, there were holes in the roof and rain was getting in, and there was a partial roof collapse several years ago. Inside the reactor hall is still pretty radioactive obviously, but it's probably a 1/3 of what it was. They gotta remove the "Elephant's Foot" from the basement, which was the melted fuel that became a lava and it pooled a few levels under the reactor. It's eating away at the floor and is still a threat but not anything that would happen anytime soon.

It's not nearly as dangerous today and I think it's about a half hour that would give you a fatal dose. In 86, it would probably kill you in a minute or so.

I just finished watching the series last night. It was a damn good series. It had a few oversights, another 2 or 3 episodes would've been good.

I was surprised they skipped the construction of the first sarcophagus which was dangerous and cost lives as well.

I expected they would show the elephant foot too. It's the most dangerous object on the planet. If it ever hits water it will become fissile again. It weights many tons and every robot that approaches it malfunctions. It's also incredibly hot inside, both temperature and radioactivity. There's no way to move it.

Good series, if you're into being entertained by this kind of stuff.

Horrible representation of real events, if you're into actual history.

It's a movie series, not a documentary, so I can accept liberties taken. Thought it was well made and extremely effective. Well acted. Excellent tone and atmosphere. That firefighter holding a chunk of graphite...... The first sandbag helicopter just nosediving once over the reactor. Radiation and it's effects were represented well enough. It's surprising the lack of knowledge or at least preparation towards radiation at the time. Lots of bravery and sacrifice.

It certainly showed how fucking terrifying how acute radiation poisoning is. The scene with the two workers looking at the exposed reactor was excellent. A real life Medusa. In reality it was three workers. The guy that held the door was fucked up from burns until he died of leukemia several years ago.
