That's one reason why I'll never lose sleep over the Anderson films. Funnily enough there's an argument that they were more faithful in some aspects like looks, some elements and such. It probably helped with making RE more main stream with the first few films too, which I think this new film and its likely sequels will never do.
Yeah, there may be some retcons but it usually isn't significant or huge in the grand scheme. I think the destruction of Raccoon City is one of the more notable retcons but it's only with how many died, and how publicly known it is. I thought how it was publicly seen in-universe would matter, but for all the story issues I take with RE, it's not that bad. The characters are usually fine too, so this was bad. Like I said with the Anderson films, they got the looks down well and their traits too. Some would argue Wesker and Ada not actually dying could count, but this is a series about the living dead and in Wesker's case, it worked good.
In terms of the hate, I still haven't seen anyone praising it in my circle. I expected some of my post-RE7 friends to like it but they really didn't.
