I've had Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 since 2018 and barely picked it up or played it. I cannot for the life of me figure out what keeps going wrong every time I pick it up again.

It’s just boring. As fuck. Some people enjoy it and that’s cool. I’m having a lot of fun with the Halo Infinite campaign at the moment. Trying to juggle that and TheHunter: Call of the Wild and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Also really need to try out the Director’s Cut of Ghost of Tsushima and actually get around to playing Days Gone.

BTW, I don't know how people play games where you gotta aim with a controller. Aim assist and auto-targeting just takes all the fun out of the experience, but without them it's a nightmare. I felt like a badass playing HZD with mouse and keyboard, it was actually challenging yet rewarding.

It’s easier to play modern shooters on a controller. When it was just Quake Arena and Counter Strike, pc was the way to go. Nowadays, you have to juggle sliding, crouching and all other manner of mobility features. It’s far easier on console/controller.

Resident Evil Village (or 8 idk what we call it) - 7.5/10. I could put it a bit higher if it remained more consistent, explained stuff better and wasn't a worse RE4 in first person. I found it a lot more fun then RE7 and even scarier (but not by much). The game fell off hard after Lady D bit the dust imo, still fine but there's a lot wrong in each area past that. The puzzle house was pretty good but way too short, a bit much with some puzzle elements and I don't like the end bit with 'The Baby'. The water area felt weird and not that fun, with a lame boss fight and laughable boss. The factory basically felt like the final bit of RE4, dragging a bit. I still had a good time overall as intended with shooting, some character interactions (I fucking love The Duke lmao, I hope he lived.) and felt it was trying decently.
Since we've talked about Ethan's fate, yeah. I'm mostly in agreement. I only felt bad because the guy wanted nothing to do with this insane series, also because Chris is a fucking dumb asshole but unlike the other protagonists, it was nice to see someone who wanted out and didn't feel the need to save the world. I don't really feel for his 'save my daughter' plight though. I would have preferred they made it so that he became crippled and the Winters bowed out of the series. It's where the story fell apart.

PC port of "God of War" (4) - 5/10

Another weak port from a cheap third party. Bare minimum of options, no DX12 support, no exclusive fullscreen, no manual resolution change, no DOF-off option, etc. Heavy RAM/VRAM memory leaks, depending on what type of cards you have. Massive stutters in random places all the time. There's been like four or five very light pseudo-patches, none has fixed anything. I've played on high/ultra anyway since the game won't let me supersample better resolution, but still had to stop and reload the game every two-three hours due to memory leaks.

Anyway, my thoughts on it overall didn't change. It's a good story with fun characters and great themes, but the actual gameplay is a mess. "Exploring for loot" thing doesn't work here because locations are very plain and uninteresting. The combat isn't engaging because camera is too close to the action, enemies are as boring and samey as it gets. I cannot imaging how anyone could enjoy doing 90% of its activities without hearing massive dumps of cool dialogs and lore along the way.

The Witcher 3 - 11/10

I haven't had this much fun with a game since I was a kid

It's strange to feel this kind of joy over a game again, I can't even properly review this game because I love it so much

My last game session lasted for about 9 hours, normally I can't play any game for more than 2 hours without getting tired of it. This game is something else... and it's easily one of my all time favorites. The fact that I got the best ending (Ciri lives and becomes a Witcher) is just the fattest cherry on top I could ever get

I loved every minute of it

I feel like I miss it and I'm not even fully done with this yet, it's time to play the DLCs

Edit: Something I forgot, the music is beautiful, now if I don't hear the ambience music constantly I feel deaf

The Witcher is really good. One of the first true next gen games on the ps4 and Xbox One back when it was released.

The Last of Us II - Gameplay is 7/10, story is 3/10. Visuals are 8/10, audio is 7/10. Overall...5? Hard to say.

Yeah so, I put this off for a while and guess I couldn't any longer? The story somehow gets worse the more I played it, and here's the crazy thing: If Abby didn't exist and/or wasn't playable...I dunno, I'd probably mark the story a lot higher. At least 6, which is notable since I almost gave it a 2/10. Ellie's portion was actually pretty good with some really good moments. Seeing Joel and Ellie being family like, the Dina stuff was cute, I surprisingly liked Jesse. Abby's stuff is manipulative, not at all interesting, and FUCKING STUPID! I wanted to like Lev, but wow. That kid is a fucking idiot and made everything worse for everyone. I was ok since Abby had nothing by the end but since it felt like the devs went 'hey Ellie has a really good ending and almost even a good message before she returns to the plot, SO LETS KILL IT FOR HER TOO!', I hate Lev for that too.

The worst part is it undoes so much of the first game's brilliance. You were allowed to make your view on the ending, but now suddenly you need to feel what Druckman says and realize it did a lot of bad. Hell, the story even copied some ideas (scrapped or completed) from the first game I found. The cannibals being the only group that chased after Joel and Ellie due to previous actions was great because no other group did and I know people went 'oh shit, all those guys we killed are now going to catch up with them'. In this game, no one even wants to really go after Joel before he dies so it's dumb.

It plays really well, but I just don't think it does enough new and didn't go all the way on a lot. The audio was good but I felt some tracks don't match the first games' which had a consistent, memorable and almost catchy beat.

I don't want a third TLOU unless it's a different cast or ignores this game. As for Naughty Dog...well at least their other franchises can't be tarnished I guess? Crash is well out of their hands (funnily enough I took Its About Time as my GOTY WAY over TLOU II but I hope we can see something), Jak they seemed smart to not do much with after the racing game, Uncharted ended really well and I'm surprised.

Gameplay is great. Easily an 8 or 9… but that story was so stupid. Some parts are good though. It just didn’t need some of the subliminal messaging.

Subliminal? It was in your face. The first game may not have been subtle (at least it tried), but it wasn't offensive. Problem is with the story is that the game is so much more focused on its story then its gameplay. I also think going back to the TLOU world lost a lot of the charm, and the fact that it was only in ONE location 80% of the time. Even when the beginning of the first game was mainly in Massachusetts (a state I am very familiar with), they kept it very distinct visually. I loved seeing Bill's town, and the college. It's just wet, and flooded for the majority of TLOU II in Seattle.

For comparison since God of War 2018 was compared to TLOU...I think GOW did its narrative far better then TLOU II, even sometimes I (if nothing else TLOU I and GOW 218 were both good for similar reasons). Both games suffered from thinking they are far deeper then they really are, though 2018 justified that, also I think parenthood was why the studios got for all three games' plots? But I can watch many scenes and moments from GOW 2018 because 1. Kratos was still Kratos (never apologizes for one sided mistakes, still can fuck up anyone, and he's grown) 2. scenes simply worked and made sense 3. cutscenes weren't LONG or dull (also even TLOU I had dumb moments in its cutscenes, II just made it worse) for no reason. GOW 2018 has problems on its gameplay, but at least it worked better for what they tried.

That said, I would gladly take old GOW over the new one and TLOU I is still a great experience to me.

I recently started Hearts of Stone, my playtime this time was almost 10 hours... this really is a testament of how much I love this game, I can't say it reflects its quality, I meant it's great, but I went in knowing about this world and caring about the characters, I was already biased. But I'm not the only one who's loving it, my wife fell asleep during my play time while looking into the materials she needs to get to make a Yennefer cosplay, I just wish I didn't cut my hair it was longer than Geralt's, oh well it'll grow back

BTW I still feel deaf if I don't listen to the ambience music constantly, can't get enough of this

I've been playing AC Odyssey for a while now, +50 hours, I don't like the AC franchise but I do like this period of history so I gave it a shot. Turns out this game is great 10/10 would spend another +50 hours on it, and I guess I will because I'm not even close to done with it

Black Flag and Valhalla both take a steaming shit on most of the other games. I have yet to actually get into Rogue and Odyssey. There’s just something about playing those two games—I couldn’t really get into them. I tried and tried. Same with Unity, but at least I toughed it out for that one, due to the shit co-op.

Most of the games are actually pretty good though. I feel like the first one needs to be redone entirely. It was more generic than those that followed, by miles. The setting and the aesthetics of the game’s characters were pretty awesome though.

The Ezio trilogy is really good too. They go a lot more in-depth than any of the other games, not only to flesh out Ezio, but also Desmond. Which is a moot point, because they undid all of that in AC3. Speaking of which, that game had some impressive new features, but was really buggy and the story was kind of a mess. It had a great opening act though. And it introduced naval combat, which was perfected in Black Flag.

Black Flag and Valhalla are just unequivocally the very best of the franchise. The sheer amount of hours and fun I’ve had on both of them is beyond ridiculous. This is coming from someone who has spent 250+ hours on Elden Ring and still has not done everything on that fucking game.

Origins and Syndicate both felt tedious. They had amazing storylines though and some really interesting characters and some cool new features and gadgets. Would certainly recommend those games as well.

Something about Rogue did not resonate well enough with me to keep me playing past the first few hours. I dunno what it was. And Odyssey just feels too arcadey and silly, compared to something like Origins and Valhalla. Heck, even Black Flag, with some of its goofy bugs, still felt more modern.

Now, I know that Odyssey is regarded as one of the better titles in the franchise, but I’ve played them all since the first game launched in 2007 and I just don’t see it. Same with Rogue. I can’t play the side scrollers either. I’ll be the first one to shit on some of the other games, as well as some of the things they tried, and failed miserably, to implement. Like the nonsense in Brotherhood with the RTS command battles and some of the collection quests.

The worst games in the franchise are definitely Unity and AC3. If I had to rate the entire franchise:

Platinum tier: Black Flag and Valhalla
Gold tier: The Ezio Trilogy
Silver tier: Origins and Syndicate
Bottom tier: Rogue, Odyssey and AC1
Shit tier: Unity and AC3

I’m probably an outlier, but as someone who has loved this franchise since day one, I feel I’ve rated them pretty fairly. They all have bugs and issues though. They’re Ubisoft games and that company has no idea how to release a near perfect product.

I don't know nor care how Odyssey is seen in the eyes of the general public, but for those of us who love Greek history and mythology it really is a fun ride, it was great to see and recognize historical figures. Now, they do make pieces of shit like Socrates and Alcibiades look good... but you can see why they were pieces of shit irl with how they where handled in the game

And I will play Black Flag since I got it for free, but I heard some unforgivable bullshit about the portrayal of Alfred The Great in Valhalla so I'll stay away from it like it's a radioactive pile of shit, besides I have no love for the Viking stuff

I'm also considering playing Far Cry Primal, I'll probably give it a shot if it's ever on sale

I’ve always appreciated Viking stories. Same with Greek mythology. I actually didn’t think I would like Black Flag. Outside of Pirates of the Caribbean, I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan of pirate type lore or characters. But that game was fucking phenomenal on the Xbox One X.

I love Greek Mythology. Always have. It’s very difficult to get into Odyssey, for me. Something about the way it plays just puts me off. I can’t explain it. Rogue is the same way for me. That game came out around the time as one of the other games, due to that specific game not being on a previous gen console. So, they made Rogue to compensate for that fact and to placate fans who only had the older consoles. It suffered, because of that.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart - 8.5/10. Great to see the series back in form, had an absolute joy from start to finish. Main reason I got a PS5 and glad I did. Gonna revisit it soon for the platinum trophy. Only issues were getting some things from older games (like the hover boots) later, some plot stuff and music being only ok. But it had a lot of great moments and ideas that just worked.

Also Rivet is faaaaaaaar better then anyone from TLOU II. Funny how Insomniac is now doing great at stories but still gameplay.

Tekken 7: 6/10.

Mostly a piece of shit. Story mode is terrible and bare bones. Arguably the worst narrative driven story mode in a fighting game ever. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.

Although I'm going to go back and start playing all the old ones. Anything after Dark Resurrection isn't worth playing. I thought Tekken 6 was dogshit.

Is Rogue the one with a female assassin called Evie? I got her as a lieutenant in my ship and she looks hilariously out of place but she can fight

I'm definitely giving Black Flsg a shot after I'm done with a few games here, one of which is Stray, I don't like cats but it was free so why not

Rogue is the one where you play the double agent Templar. You’re actually playing as the guy who kills Connor’s father, if I remember correctly. Evie was the sister in Syndicate.
