I just got home from Houston (they did not kneel) and this was waiting for me:

And for a size comparison this is what it looks like next to Bandai's 1:144 scale Millennium Falcon:

Current Project: I'm hoping to get a few hours to finish this up in the next few days. This is a Bandai Y-Wing with ArchiveX paints. Mostly airbrushed. Then I'm on to a 1:20 Veritech Fighter.

I had assembled and primer coated the model some time ago. But I picked this back up a week ago and have put about 20 hours into painting.

I read into some nice reference photos of the studio model and felt inspired.

Thanks. Spent some time this evening doing some more painting.

"Almost there."

Masking and painting livery for Roy Focker's VF-1. I'll need to let this dry for a day or so before I can mask off the black paint and spray yellow where you see white in the final image.

I wish I had the balls to try and paint a model kit. I can't even do decal transfers.

More fine details. This is probably the last of the airbrushing for this model. I need to do a little fine brush painting on the round engine covers. Next I'll go over parts of it with sandpaper and a dremel.

Who can do just one project at a time? Here's the start of a Rebel Blockade Runner. So far this has primer, some under-shading and a base coat.

Y-Wing - Final

Sandpaper and nicks on the engine housings and forward fuselage. Dark grey "chipping" to match the studio model. Also it's been bugging me I had reference for a different Y-Wing mixed in early in the paint process. This led me to do a white fade on the front of the yellow group marking. That's fixed now.

Into the display case it goes. This one is done.

New toy today: Iwata Hi-Line HP-BH. A very significant upgrade from my Iwata M1 Revolution and Iwata NEO. This thing can freehand a fine pencil line up to a two inch wide area. The valve dial under the cup gives me fine air pressure control on the airbrush instead of screwing with the regulator on the compressor.

This is a bad motherfucker. I shall be playing later.

The weathering on that is fantastic. Model kits always look great being worn. The shittier and dirtier, the better.

I made a reasonable effort to copy the weather and colors used on Gold Leader (the model commonly called "Tie Killer" on places like the RPF). There's more rust and green on it than you can see on the 1970's era film stock. It's a very colorful model. It always looked very white and stark on film. I got pretty damn close to the available images of the model. It's not just the painting - you need to scratch up and sand on the paint to get the right look in places.

Also I didn't realize until working on this the Y-Wings did not have astromechs during the trench run. They had empty droid slots, hench mine is empty as well.

"Tie Killer" (named for the tiny kill marker on it's nose) is in private ownership and hasn't been seen since ~1977. It was not available for Empire or Jedi - the hero Y-Wing in those films was built by Bill George. He built that Y-Wing with the available refference of the day and it has some proportional differences from the Y-Wings in SW.

OK. I loved the airbrush, didn't care for the small cup with no lid. I traded up to the Iwata Hi-Line HP-CH. It's all the same engineering but I don't need to worry about spilling or splatter from a clog.

0.2mm needle, nozzle and fittings but it can also use a .3mm without too much work.
