It’s adding on to the original storyline. Think of it like Trunks going back in time to save Goku and the group. It’s giving us a new game, letting old fans play something new—yet familiar—that newer fans can still enjoy. I’ve always vaguely known the original story.

I kinda wish they wouldn’t have called this a remake, because it’s really not. From a marketing standpoint, it probably makes more sense though. However, it’s a literal continuation of the original game and Advent Children.

Sephiroth can’t die—for whatever reason. He keeps trying to reincarnate himself through the lifestream. That’s what Advent Children was about. Those three idiots were willed into existence by Sephiroth. The Sephiroth in this game is the one you killed in the original storyline (and Advent Children) and he’s trying to prevent his initial defeat by changing the events of the original game.

For the most part, the first “remake” game follows the same path that the original does, up until the last section of the game, where it starts to take a few turns, which Fate curtails. Sephiroth then makes Cloud expose and take out the being that controls the “Fate” of the planet and all of those that live there.

Now that he’s accomplished this, Sephiroth will try to alter the events that led to his original demise and will then, presumably, inhabit his past reincarnated self. Pretty sure that boss fight is going to be the hardest one in all of the Final Fantasy games. Cloud will basically be fighting a god who not only possesses all of the knowledge from former encounters and life experiences, but has also lived through several defeats at the hands of Cloud and will not allow another. That shit is going to suck.

Anyway, I think it’s pretty neat that they’re continuing on from the old PS1 game and Advent Children. There’s even a chance that Aerith has inherited knowledge through the lifestream from her former self. There were several hints dotted about the game when I played it. I don’t really get excited about much anymore, but Final Fantasy VII still does it for me.
