Yeah, the story is going a bit bonkers in this one. It’s become an age-old battle and the slayer always loses? I haven’t seen enough of the story bits yet, but that’s what it seems like. I’m getting some Medieval Spawn vibes from the Marauder.

One of my favorite opening cinematics to any game I’ve played in a long time. This shit will put chest hair on a chick.

Love how they remixed the old theme. It’s good to finally have it back.

I bought Doom 2016 earlier. I liked it until I noticed there's zero voice audio because it didn't finish downloading... why even bother let you start it then?

Pretty much exactly what I thought was really going on behind the scenes.
Stratton gave me that douchbag-manager-who-hates-the-fans vibe.
Gordon, on the other hand, always felt like a introverted workholic.
Just another story of a naive freelancer being used by a big corpo.

. . .

By the way, all-in-all the game is dogshit. I hate how it went from soft sci-fi with a touch of fantasy narrative to full blown fantasy epic, with DLC story being your typical modern contrived narrative that "subverted expectations". I hate all the idiotic platforming and videogamey visials that completely break immersion. I hate that I have to deal with being reminded of online-features in a single-player game... And don't forget about that awful asymmetric multiplayer nobody asked for, instead of updating the 2016 MP with which people had tones of fun.

That was something that turned me off 2016 and I heard Eternal went even harder with it. Doom is supposed to be dumb shooter fun. There was a wafer thin plot and that was all you needed. Doom 3 did it better.

I haven’t played the Doom Eternal dlc. I couldn’t be bothered as much about the story anyway. The gameplay is a lot of fun though. I’ve yet to even touch the online stuff and never will.

IMO Doom 2016 was fine with its plot sorely for how amazing the Doom Slayer is. He doesn't speak, just does what HE believes works. They nailed it so well. Eternal did go a little...much with its story, at times I forgot about it. A few story beats worked but it's only when the Slayer is the focus. The level where you get the BFG had some great story beats but it's only because it's the Slayer not giving a fuck and how known he is by the UAC. I'd add the level with the Night Sentinels too for backstory and partially the one where you get the Crucible but it was such a pain in the ass. Other beats, ehh nah it was much. Points for trying.

I don't know much about Eternal, but having the Slayer have this giant backstory feels so anti Doom. He's just supposed to be a regular guy. He's Guts with guns.

D00M 2016 was great because "The Slayer" felt like a new misterios character with narrative background that didn't even felt like part of the story but rather something to make the player feel more badass.

"Eternal" shat all over that simple but effective aproach and went with "yep, this is Doomguy from old games who became a demon-slaying king in another dimension". And I could live with that, if that was all there is to it... But no, they just kept piling more story shit, building up big revelations and twist.
